The foundation stone of the college was laid on 4 August 1962 by former former President of Pakistan Field Marshal Muhammad Ayub Khan. The institution was established by the Dawood Foundation as Dawood College of Engineering and Technology. The college houses two purpose-built campuses.
Before 2007, Dawood College of Engineering functioned as an affiliated institute, initially with University of Karachi, then NED University of Engineering and Technology and then with Mehran University of Engineering and Technology. After this period, the decision was made by the government to upgrade the college to an autonomous institution and as a a result the College was granted a Degree-Awarding status by a Presidential Ordinance on 31 October 2007. Later on, the Degree-Awarding status was approved by the National Assembly and Senate of Pakistan on 3 November 2010.[1]
College's main campus known as Jinnah campus, is located on New M.A Jinnah Road, situated in the vicinity of National Mausoleum commonly known as Mazar-e-Quaid. This campus is home to the Engineering studies. After becoming a Degree Awarding Institution, the campus was expanded and new floors and buildings were added to accommodate new Departments and Laboratories. The existing 750-seat Auditorium was completely renovated. Currently the Cafeteria is being renovated and an Elevator is being planned to be installed in the main block.
College's second campus known as Iqbal Campus, is located in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, situated near National Stadium. This campus is home to the Architectural studies.
College offers transportation facilities to its students, which are available on both campuses. College operates buses, specifically for students which are available on major routes in the city.
Applicants may become eligible to be admitted to the university if they have completed secondary education. Eligible students must sit in the Admission test conducted by the college for the purpose of admission. Final merit decisions are made by the College on the basis of combined marks of the HSC, SSC and Admission test exams.
